Qatar is planning to increase the life span of its infrastructure projects, especially roads, from the current 35 years to 100 years by using an advanced technology, according to a Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) official.
Mohammed bin Saif al Kuwari, Assistant Undersecretary for Laboratories and Standardizations Affairs at the MME, said he has been associated with more than 20 research papers over the last few years and found out that all projects in Qatar and GCC countries were designed for 75 years, but actually are executed for 35 years.
He said with the new technology the dream of extending the life span of infrastructure projects, especially roads, to 100 years will become a reality.
"I will meet with experts of three leading UK universities such as Queen University to get an insight into the new technology during this summer," Kuwari said.
He was speaking at a press conference on Sunday to announce the details of the third Qatar Construction Specifications (QCS) conference which will convene on May 22 in Doha.
The conference, which is held under the patronage of Minister of the Municipality and Environment, aims to discuss the quality and specifications of primary materials used in major projects.
Kuwari said the conference is an opportunity to raise awareness about Qatar's specifications for construction which is mandatory.
The conference is sponsored by Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC), Qatar Industrial Manufacturing Company (QIMC) and Lusail Real Estate Development Company.
Director of strategic and corporate planning at the Lusail Real Estate Development Company, Abdulaziz al Ziyarah said Lusail is building the largest smart city in the world and the company is fully committed to the development of the city so as to ensure the quality of construction for generations to come.
