Emir seeks to build EU-style security pact for Middle East region, says GCO Director Mar 09, 2018 0 1389 12345 QNADOHAThe Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani is seeking to build a security pact for the Middle East along the lines of the European Union (EU) system, Director of the Government Communications Office (GCO) HE Sheikh Saif bin Ahmed al Thani has said.In a statement on Thursday, Sheikh Saif said,"Qatar aims to ensure that no such blockade is imposed on any other country and a platform for conflict resolution is established in the region. The platform would like to join the EU system or that of the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)."He added,"We want stability in the region like that of the EU through dialogue and talking about security," he said, adding that"the only way to combat terrorism is to work together."Reiterating Qatar's firm stance rejecting terrorism, Sheikh Saif stressed the need for concerted action to address its root causes. On the social effects of the blockade imposed on Qatar since June 5, 2017, Sheikh Saif said,"The siege created social hardships for Qatari families. Citizens can no longer see their families and it is difficult for them to go to the holy places to perform Hajj.""To end the crisis, Qatar sees one solution. We must resume dialogue. Thousands of people are suffering from this situation," he said.Sheikh Saif denied any link of Qatar to financing of terrorism from near or far and asked the blockading countries to provide any evidence in this regard. "They want to justify the sanctions by raising the issue of terrorism, but they never discussed the issue before the embargo was imposed," he noted. Sheikh Saif pointed out that the blockading countries also accuse Qatar of allowing some of its wealthy citizens to support terrorism, as stated on the lists prepared by the four countries."These lists are baseless. We in Qatar have measures to combat terrorism," he added.Sheikh Saif said Qatar's stature has grown in the international arena over the past 15 years, thanks to the success of Qatari diplomacy in conflict resolution in many places. He said Qatar won the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, it is seeing an energy boom and Al Jazeera channel has gone global. All this made some countries believe that the development and progress of Qatar at a very rapid pace will affect them, so these countries seek to reduce the role of Qatar by imposing a blockade, he said. œWe have been very active over the past years at the international level. We want more stability in the world, he added. On the vision of Qatar for the Arab Spring, he said these revolutions took place after citizens of some countries took to the streets to demand more equality and the right to dignified living. He added that Qatar welcomed and recognised the right of these peoples to obtain their rights through communication with the governments of the Arab Spring countries, but never supported individuals, groups or parties. He reiterated that Qatar does not support any individuals, groups or parties. On Syria, Sheikh Saif said the regime of Bashar al Assad has caused irreparable harm to the country by using violence against his own people and paving way for the spread of terrorism.
