Al Markhiya Gallery recently collaborated with Art 29 at the W Hotel to present an exhibition called Perspectives-Contemporary Arab Women Artists representing a variety of art forms all created by Arab women artists. The exhibition, which began on February 20, is a wonderful collection by 11 Arab women from Yemen, Palestine, Kuwait, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and three home-grown artists from Qatar. It will run until March 19 and is open to the public.
"The main objective of this exhibition was to concentrate on women artists from across the Arab world," said Heather al Nuweiri from the Al Markhiya Gallery.
Since its opening, Al Markhiya Gallery has always showcased and promoted Qatari and Arab artists."We wanted to have a representation of different styles, different countries. We want to introduce people to art and its different mediums in different forms. We chose to showcase artists from different countries rather than sticking to one," she said.
The exhibition also presents works of three Qatari artists Ebtisam al Saffar, Fatma al Shebani and Wadha al Sulaiti. While Fatma has created interesting black-and-gold sculptures that sit at the entrance of the exhibition, Ebtisam has created three paintings that revolve around faces. Wadha has created four calligraphic art designs.
Other artists whose works are on show at the exhibition include Reem Yassouf and Iman Hasbani from Syria, Ginou Chouheiri and Mona Nahleh from Lebanon, Amnah al Nasiri from Yemen, Dina Mattar from Palestine, Fetooh Shummoh from Kuwait and Hilda Hiary from Jordan.
Al Markhiya Gallery was established with a mission to promote art in Qatar and the region."We want people to get interested in art. We are always looking for new artists. We hope to increase awareness about art made in Qatar and through out the Arab world." said Heather.
