Reda got the better of a pair of Umm Qarn horses and won the Al Zubara Trophy, the crowning glory of the opening day at HH the Emir's Sword Festival at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club Racecourse on Thursday.
The six-year-old bay horse, owned by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Thani and trained by Julian Colin Smart, was handled brilliantly by Theo Bachelot and they went on to beat Majeed (Oliver Peslier) by over one length in the 2,000m race.
The third place was taken by Damas, another Umm Qarn horse with Jean Baptiste Hamel astride. She'ris (Eduardo Pedroza) was fourth by nearly three lengths, while the top five was completed by Al Marboush, ridden by Harry Bentley.
This was the fifth victory for Reda in 22 runs and first since claiming the Dubai Kayahla Classic on May 26 last year. The effort wrapped up a double for the rider - the same as JP Guillambert and Tomas Lukasek did today.
Bachelot earlier set Izghawa up for a thrilling half-length victory against Broadway Icon. Bachelot and rider Marvin Suerland brought the two contestants close to the finish line and it was the former who was able to get the six-year-old bay mare through in the Thoroughbred Handicap Class 3 1,200m sprint. The third place was taken by Catch A Wave, ridden by Pierantonio Convertino, by over two lengths.
The Sheikh Faisal bin Hamad bin Jassim al Thani-owned Izghawa has been in great form this season and it was her seventh win in 22 runs and five in last six runs.
Another rider to savour a double winner was Guillambert, who first took Rich History to a three-quarters triumph over Alizoom in the Thoroughbred Handicap Class 4 2,000m race.
Later, he guided Receding Waves, owned by Khalifa bin Sheail al Kuwari and trained by Mohammed Riyaz Ibrahim Kasim, to an over-one-length triumph in the Thoroughbreds Class 2 1,200m dash. Poet's Song, with Lukasek astride, was second, beating Black Beach by short head. This was the fourth victory in 15 races for the five-year-old bay colt.
Lukasek also tasted a victory with Al Rayyan, a six-year-old chestnut gelding, in the Thoroughbred Handicap Class 3 run over 1,600m. Burrishoole Abbey, with Bentley on the back, had a close battle for the line and it was Al Rayyan who managed to edge to a neck victory his second in 17 races in Doha. Ard San Aer was third.
Haddaj Dukhan was guided to a pulsating short head triumph in the Purebred Arabian Handicap 1,600m race by Lukasek against Khor Al Adaid. Al Eshrah was third by over one length. After a series of second-place finishes this season, the six-year-old recorded first win in nine runs.
