Qatar has improved its ranking in the 2017 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), which is issued annually by Transparency International (TI).
Qatar secured the advanced ranking of 29 with a score of 63 in 2017 as against a ranking of 31 in 2016. It has also been ranked second least corrupt in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region.
The index, which ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and businesspeople, uses a scale of 0-100, where a score of zero is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean.
The authority pointed out that the results of this year showed the progress of Qatar in the index, making it rank second in the MENA region in the light of the decline of most of the countries that occupied advanced positions last year.
"This year Qatar ranked higher on the index than in previous years. This is due to good and efficient management of public finances, improved public procurement and better access to public services and infrastructure," the authority said in a report.
The authority pointed out that the ranking, which comes within many other international indicators, confirms the success of Qatar in maintaining its leadership and progress in several areas despite the challenging conditions.
The authority affirmed that the results of this indicator have grabbed the attention of many countries, investors as well as development and human rights organisations around the world, especially it relies on a number of sub-indicators from prestigious international organisations such as the World Bank, the World Economic Forum, the Bertelsmann Foundation and the Economist Intelligence Unit.
The results also revealed the negative impact of the political instability and conflicts, which have led to the decline of many Middle East countries.
CPI measures the perceived level of corruption in the public sector, drawing on 13 data sources based on expert assessment and business views.
