The alertness of two customs inspectors has led to the seizure of 22.7 kilograms (kg) of cannabis and 5 kg of marijuana at the Hamad International Airport (HIA).
In the biggest of the drug hauls, an inspector found something suspicious with one of the carriers, leading to the detention of two of his accomplices as well.
According to a press statement from the General Authority of Customs, the three of them had come to Qatar on a direct flight from an Asian country.
The three men split the contraband drug into four packets of 8 kg, 6 kg, 4.7 kg and 3.5 kg. They tried to smuggle them in hidden pouches of four bags. The secret sections were designed to look like parts of the bags on cursory checks.
The marijuana seizure was made when a female customs inspector checked a suspicious passenger's hand bag.
The drug hauls have been reported to the authorities for follow-up procedures.
The Acting Customs Director of Hamad International Airport, Ajab Mansour al Qahtani, praised the inspectors' efforts and alertness that led to the seizures.
Qahtani pointed out that the female customs inspectors have been instrumental in detecting a lot of contraband items lately.
He also stressed the important role played by the mobile division in controlling smuggling activities.
