A PALESTINIAN folkloric performance themed 'Old is gold' regaled audience at Katara Theatre in Doha on Friday evening.
The musical soiree, organised by the Rozana group, reminisced about the folkloric heritage of Palestine with acute sense of loss.
The moving performance evoked tremendous response from the audience, including members of different community groups in Qatar.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, West Bank-based singer Henna, who held the audience spell-bound with her soulful singing, described heritage as a"treasure" which must be preserved.
The Palestinian singer was accompanied by her own orchestra group from the West Bank.
"This is my first performance in Qatar and the region and I would like to thank the Cultural Village Foundation-Katara for the opportunity. Katara's attempt to revive Palestine's forgotten rich cultural heritage through such events is indeed laudable," Henna said.
"I have carefully selected my songs after visiting Palestinian villages and listening to the older folk who remember the art form and the songs," she added.
According to her, she was trying to popularise the forgotten songs of Palestine by reaching out to the younger generation of the country as efforts were on to erase the Palestinian identity in the occupied land.
Palestine's Ambassador to Qatar HE Munir Ghannam, who attended the concert, told Qatar Tribune that the folkloric performance reflected Palestine's real identity.
The ambassador praised the Rozana group and the Ministry of Culture and Sports in Qatar for supporting such cultural initiatives."Art enables you to convey even your ugliest experiences beautifully. These Palestinian artists have conveyed the message of people's struggle in Palestine in a touching manner," the ambassador said.
Farah Dawwas from Rozana group, which is a Qatar-based self-motivated team that aims to preserve Palestinian culture, said that the cultural event has been organised for the second year in a row. Dawwas added,"We are trying to preserve the dying Palestinian culture. Rozana group not only organises folkloric concerts, but also workshops and lectures to create an influential society of youngsters outside Palestine in order to protect rights of Palestinians."
