EXOTIC, eco-friendly bamboo houses, furniture as well as toys and other household items made of bamboo are getting increasingly popular in Qatar.
Talking to Qatar Tribune recently, representatives of agencies dealing with bamboo products revealed that lately they have started receiving increasing number of enquiries regarding their products.
Abdul Amir Qussabi, director of Bamboo House, which makes bamboo cane houses and other household items in Doha, said:"Though we launched our office in Qatar a couple of years ago, our business picked up after the blockade, only a few months back."
Ruling out any disruption of supply of bamboos during the ongoing siege, he added, that bamboo canes are imported from Malaysia, Indonesia and China.
According to Qussabi, though they already have two offices one at Souq Waqif and another at Al Wakrah they are planning to have a showroom in one of the malls owing to the increasing demand.
He said that bamboo houses and other bamboo products being made by his company got noticed by a large number of residents during the recently held Made in Qatar Exhibition. Since then, many people have shown interest in bamboo cane houses, he added.
"We are receiving enquiries regarding our products daily. With the kind of favourable response we have received in a short span of time, I expect our business to register 100 percent growth within a year," Qussabi added.
Highlights of the bamboo products exhibited at Made in Qatar included an attractive double-storied house with bedroom, drawing room and balcony for affordable price and a hut called 'Jalsa' for a gathering of family and friends.
"We have experienced Indonesian craftsmen who can deliver a 'Jalsa' worth QR15,000 in 10 to 15 days," Qussabi said.
Bamboo furniture, toys and bird cages were also in great demand.
A Qatari resident said:"As Qatar has embarked upon the move to achieve sustainable development, eco-friendly bamboo houses should be promoted to create healthy surroundings."
Besides, the beautiful bamboo houses which last for a considerable period of time can also boost tourism if they are built near beaches and sand dunes, he remarked.
