Qatar is in talks with active global entities on the possibility of establishing a regional dialogue for sustainable peace, Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador HE Sheikha Alia bint Ahmed bin Saif al Thani said on Thursday.
In her opening speech at Doha Regional Dialogue on Sustaining Peace, Sheikha Alia added that there was complete agreement among stakeholders on the importance of a regional dialogue for sustainability of peace and the forum provides a platform for discussing concrete examples of successful approaches in this regard.
A number of Arab and Muslim countries, in addition to civil society organisations and non-governmental organisations are taking part in the dialogue.
The event seeks to reach a mutual understanding and political consensus among UN member states, regional and civil organisations and the private sector on the relationship between sustainable development, conflict prevention, mediation, peacekeeping and human rights.
Sheikha Alia said that the event comes as part of Qatar's efforts to support the president of UN General Assembly in his endeavours to support peace building and sustainability.
She further pointed out that the regional dialogue seeks to enhance local efforts and an open dialogue between all parties and civil society organisations to achieve peace sustainability.
She said that civil society organisations are playing a key role in this pursuit by ensuring that the needs of women and the youth are met, in addition to other segments such as religious and social leaders.
Sheikha Alia reiterated Qatar's long-term interest in building and sustaining peace by looking at root causes and supporting mediation efforts to achieve it.
She added that Qatar's efforts in this direction have been clear for all as it worked for peace, safety, development, human rights and other factors.
Sheikha Alia noted that Qatar works to achieve sustainable development and solve the root causes of extremism, violence and human trafficking, in addition to promoting and strengthening education, global security and human rights. Doha also actively participates in a group for safety sustainability in New York and its global mediation efforts that are led by Turkey and Finland.
On the study related to the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325 on women and peace and security, she called for exerting more efforts to enhance peace sustainability and empowering women in different communities.
She noted that Qatar has backed UN efforts to support the different capacity building programmes that aim to prevent conflicts, build peace and empower women.
Today's consultations focused on a number of aspects, including the link between peace sustainability and sustainable development 2030, the vital role of women and youth, equal opportunity, prevention of conflicts, peacemaking, and the financing of peacekeeping operations.
The Doha Regional Dialogue on Sustaining Peace aims to reach a joint understanding and political consensus between states, the United Nations, regional organisations, civil society and the private sector regarding the relationship between sustainable development and the prevention of conflicts as well as mediation, peacekeeping and human rights.
The Doha Dialogue is a culmination of the efforts of Qatar, which began months ago to prepare for the high-level meeting on peace building and peace sustainability to be held at the UN headquarters in New York in April.
