Qatar is proposing to hold a global conference on preventive diplomacy to achieve peace, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs HE Sultan bin Saad al Muraikhi has said.
"Qatar is ready to host it out of its firm belief on the role preventive diplomacy plays in achieving peace," Muraikhi said at the Doha Regional Dialogue on Sustaining Peace on Thursday.
"We take into consideration the crucial role of preventive diplomacy, which is a fundamental pillar of the vision of the United Nations Secretary-General, and the contents of his message for 2018, which stresses on the absence of peace in the region," Muraikhi said.
He said such a conference is necessary now more than ever as the global community is facing serious threats.
"These threats put the United Nations as an entity for collective security in a real test for achieving peace in the world," he said, adding that Qatar will continue to support the efforts of the United Nations in achieving global peace.
Qatar is supporting peace efforts, especially through its vision and belief in the importance of education as a fundamental element in preventing conflict and maintaining peace, he added.
"Our vision gives top priority to systemic prevention, mediation and conflict resolution. For that, we have committed ourselves to educating 7 million children and providing economic empowerment to half a million youth in the region," the minister explained.
He said Qatar's commitment to achieving peace and sustainability is reflected in the policies and steps taken by it within the framework of international cooperation on all issues that are important to the international community.
Muraikhi reiterated Qatar's commitment to implementing the UN development plan 2030.
He described it as a plan for development and peace that complies with Qatar's policies in supporting peace, promoting human rights, addressing inequality, achieving justice, combating corruption and consolidating noble human values such as freedom of speech and the right to participate in decision making.
"Peace can only be achieved by justice and balance in order to satisfy the interests of different countries, regardless of their wealth or geographical area, and when justice and balance are broken, the result is conflicts and instability," Muraikhi added.
The minister said Qatar, under the wise leadership of the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, has made great strides in realising the UN elements of development in all fields. He said this included protecting the rights and dignity of all those living in Qatar and realising their hopes and aspirations for a decent life.
He concluded that it is very important for the international community to open doors for dialogue as it faces serious threats and challenges to international peace and security.
