THE Ministry of Justice has organised a seminar on the responsibility of lawyers in the implementation of law of Anti-Money Laundering/Combating Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT), in collaboration with the National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and the Financing of Terrorism and the Qatari Lawyers Association.
The seminar is the first of its kind as part of efforts of the Ministry of Justice to strengthen the national legislative system to combat terrorism and to emphasise Qatar's efforts in combating terrorism based on its established principles of renouncing violence and extremism.
The seminar also highlighted Qatar's adherence to human values and its cooperation with various countries as well as the international organisations to combat cross-border crimes, implement the global obligations of the UN Security Council related to the fight against terrorism and its financing, and bilateral agreements in this regard.
Salem Fahad al Marri, acting director of the Legal Department at the Ministry of Justice, said the seminar comes as part of the ministry's efforts to activate Qatar's legal system in fighting terrorism. He said the seminar discussed mechanisms to achieve success against terrorism and money laundering by sitting with the competent authorities such as the National Committee in charge of the subject, the legal arm concerned with implementation mechanisms and the National Lawyers' Association in implementing the law, in accordance with the jurisdiction and areas of work of legal firms in the State.
The seminar included discussions between lawyers and speakers, in which cooperation in various fields related to combating terrorism and money laundering was emphasised to ensure Qatar remain at the forefront of countries known to fight such crimes.
Hessa al Sai, head of the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Unit at the Ministry of Justice, said the seminar is an affirmation of joint responsibility and strengthening professional partnership with lawyers to reach full awareness of the dimensions of the two global phenomena and the real dealings with all their forms and causes.
She added that the Working Group at the Ministry of Justice, which works under the supervision of the Assistant Undersecretary for Real Estate Registration and Documentation, is implementing Law No 4 of 2010 to assure all of Qatar's commitment to international requirements.
