Remittances from expatriate workers in Qatar amounted to $12 billion in 2016, according to an annual report released by Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC-Stat) on Tuesday.
Foreign workers' remittances in the world's biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas made up 7.9 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) which amounted to $152.5 billion, Mubasher Qatar has quoted the annual report as saying.
Remittances of expatriates in Saudi Arabia topped the GCC with $38.9 billion, followed by the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar with $32.7 billion, $15.3 billion and $12 billion, respectively in the same period, the report said.
Foreign workers' remittances accounted for 8.2 percent or $111.5 billion of the gross domestic product of GCC countries, which were valued at $1.368 trillion in 2016.
