Minister of Municipalities and Environment HE Mohammed bin Abdullah al Rumaihi on Saturday inaugurated the Lusail Expressway project, making the eight-lane (4-4) main carriageway accessible to traffic. He also launched the Interchange 5/6, which houses two of the most iconic arches of Qatar.
With the main carriageway open, it now takes only 25 minutes to get from the Hamad International Airport to Lusail City, Katara and the Pearl Qatar.
"The Lusail Expressway, a part of which was opened earlier, has eased the traffic congestion on other roads, the minister said after the inauguration, which was attended by several officials including Ashghal President Saad al Muhannadi.
"After we opened the expressway's Pearl tunnel, around 1 million vehicles passed through it without any major incidents. This road will improve the quality of life and the real estate around this road," Muhannadi said.
One of the prominent architectural monuments in Doha, the arches of the interchange 5/6 is the biggest and tallest in Qatar, with a height of 100 metres and width of 147 metres. They weigh more than 9,300 tonnes.
Pointing out the significance of the date of inauguration of the expressway ” which falls near the Qatar National Day that comes amid an unjust siege imposed by neighbours, Eng Muhannadi said the arches symbolize the strong will of Qatar to overcome its challenges.
