The Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani inaugurated the fifth edition of the 'Made in Qatar' exhibition in Doha on Thursday.
Organised by Qatar Chamber in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Industry, Qatar Development Bank and Qatar National Bank, the four-day exhibition will display products and services by more than 450 local exhibitors ” 320 local companies and 138 productive families.
The Emir toured the pavilions at the exhibition and was briefed about the participating Qatari companies and their products. The Emir also visited the booths of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and productive families.
Speaking on the sidelines of the opening of the exhibition, Minister of Energy and Industry HE Dr Mohammed bin Saleh al Sada said the number of factories entering the production stage during the past six months in the country has doubled compared to the corresponding six months.
He said the exhibition holds a special significance as it is being organised at a time when the country is under an unjust siege."Now, there is a greater need for Qatar to set up new industries and promote local products," he said.
Sada said the 'Own Your Factory in 72 Hours' initiative has become a major hit and the government has given permission to set up 63 industrial units next year under the initiative.
"Work on these projects is personally being monitored at the government level... We have managed to turn the siege into an opportunity to develop the industrial sector," Sada said, adding that the government is fully committed to supporting local companies to achieve self-sufficiency in sectors like food and medicine.
The 'Made in Qatar' exhibition reflects Qatari manufacturers' readiness to tide over the current crisis, he said.
"This edition is special as the size of the area allocated for the exhibition was increased to 30,000 square metres from 15,000 last year. The number of exhibitors has also doubled compared to the previous edition," he said.
Praising the Emir for patronising the exhibition, Qatar Chamber Chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim bin Mohammed al Thani said,"It is a big motivating factor for Qatari manufacturers and business owners to exert extra efforts for developing industry in the country."
