Bazm-e-Sadaf International has announced its literary awards for the year 2017.
Bazm-e-Sadaf is an international literary group established in 2015. It publishes the international journal Sehmahi Sadaf in Urdu, organises symposiums and lectures on various subjects, as also mushairas, attended by noted speakers from South East Asia.
According to the chairman of Bazm-e-Sadaf, the jury has decided to confer the Bazm-e-Sadaf International Award 2017 on eminent satirist Mujtaba Hussain from Hyderabad, India and the Bazm-e-Sadaf Award for Young Writer 2017 to Pakistani writer Dr Ishrat Moeen Seema who currently resides in Germany. Both the awards will be presented at an international Urdu literary festival organised by Bazm-e-Sadaf International in India on December 29-30.
The Bazm-e-Sadaf International Award comprises a sum of Rs 100,000, a shawl, citation and memento while the Award for Young Writer consists of a sum of Rs 51,000 a shawl, citation and memento.
While announcing the awards, Bazm-e-Sadaf International Chairman Shahabuddin Ahmad recalled the previous years' awards, held in Qatar, and hoped that this year's awards would also generate the same interest. He said that in addition to the award-presentation programme, there will be a seminar on Sir Syed Ahmed Khan's birth bicentenary celebrations titled 'Sir Syed Ahmed Khan's Conception of Education'.
An international mushaira, panel discussion, drama and other cultural programmes will be added attractions of the event. About a dozen new publications by Maktaba-e-Sadaf will be released during the event.
Bazm-e-Sadaf Director Prof Safdar Imam Quadri said that first awardee, Hussain, is a leading satirist of Urdu Literature. Born on July 15, 1936, the litterateur has authored about two dozen books covering genres like satire, humour, travelogues, pen portraits and journalistic columns. In 2007, Hussain received the Padma Shree Award from the Government of India.
Dr Ishrat Moeen Seema, the Bazm-e-Sadaf Young Writer awardee is Pakistan-born German linguist, short story writer, poet and travelogue writer. She has authored six books in Urdu and German. She has been recognised by most European organisations working in the field of Urdu literature.
Quadri said that for the December 2017 festival of Bazm-e-Sadaf International, authors, critics and research scholars from Australia, Germany, Britain, Canada, Qatar, Bangladesh, Mauritius etc have been invited. Qatar residents including Suhail Bukhari, Hassan AK Choughule, Shahabuddin Ahmad, Ahmad Ashfaque, Jawaid Alam, Mohammad Irfanullah, Rizwan Khan and Om Prakash will participate in the programme.
