IN an effort to raise public awareness about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) as it turns 70 in 2018, the Office of High Commissioner Human Rights (OHCHR) is planning to launch a global campaign called 'Stand up for Human Rights' in Doha on Friday.
The three-day programme to be launched at Katara seafront will feature various activities including drawing and handicraft workshops for children as well as cultural and folkloric performances by international artistes to raise awareness about UDHR.
Regional representative of United Nations Human Rights (UNHR) George Abu al Zulof told Qatar Tribune:"The recent developments that have taken place globally as well as in our region have clearly stated a pattern of deterioration leading to the lack of respect for the principles and values of UDHR."
He continued,"As a result, this year we propose to celebrate the anniversary of the UDHR in a way that would remind everybody including governments, institutions, civil society actors, inter-governmental organisations and others, about the values and principles enshrined in this historical instrument of UDHR."
The highlight of this event will be the performance of Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra preceded by the official addresses by Dr Ali bin Smaikh al Marri, chairman of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC); Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim alSulaiti, general manager of Katara and George Abu al-Zulof, head of the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for Arab Region & South-West Asia.
The celebration of the 70th anniversary of UDHR is organised in collaboration with Katara and NHRC.
