Confucian Roots
THE deep pockets of Chinese governments are envied by countries around the world. But Chinese citizens, officially presented as the masters of the country, have little knowledge of how and where this public money is spent by their 'servants.' In particular, ordinary people ...
EGYPT'S MORSI AND ISRAEL
IS the election of Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, as president of Egypt the beginning of the end of the Camp David peace treaty between Israel and Egypt? It doesn't have to be. In fact, it could actually be the beginning of a real peace between ...

Federer, Murray set for final

FOR Roger Federer, it´s Wimbledon final No. 8. For Andy Murray, it´s No. 1 - and the first for a British man since 1938. Federer, a 16-time Grand Slam champion, beat defending champion Novak Djokovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Friday under the closed roof at Centre Court to reach ...

Sagan beats Greipel for stage victory in Tour de France
PETER Sagan sealed the first week of his maiden Tour de France with his third stage victory in a crash-ridden 207.5-km sixth stage which seriously hurt the chances of some leading favourites. The 22-year-old Slovak outpaced the leading part of a scattered bunch to achieve a spectacular treble ahead of Germany´s Andre Greipel, the winner of the two previous stages and one of many riders to hit the tarmac between Epernay and Metz. Australian Matthew Goss took third while Swiss Fabian Cancellara, who also avoided the worst pile-up of the day, retained his overall leader´s yellow jersey. "I won five in California, four in Switzerland, now three in France. I didn´t expect to win that many stages in my first Tour but why stop now?" said ...
Britain´s Hamilton fastest at rain-soaked Grand Prix
LEWIS Hamilton put on a solo show to thrill the rain-soaked crowds and top the times in Friday afternoon´s second free practice session for this weekend´s British Grand Prix. On a soggy, puddle-strewn circuit at Silverstone, the 27- year-old Briton threw his McLaren around the track in thrilling fashion, frequently rescuing it and himself when he appeared to be sliding off. His dramatic effort, during the final 20 minutes of the day´s action after heavy rain had wrecked all the previous practice time, provided bright, if limited entertainment for a good Friday crowd that had been frustrated by appalling traffic problems before being soaked in the storms. Japanese Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber was second fastest...
Olympic-bound NBA stars to know fate today
MEMBERS of the US Olympic team of NBA stars reported to training camp on Thursday and will start workouts on Friday before the roster is trimmed to a final 12-man squad on Saturday. Injuries have cut the list of 20 candidates to 14 healthy ones, with such stars as centre Dwight Howard, guards Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade, and forward Chris Bosh — a third of the likely Olympians — out of London consideration. What remains is the core from two US championship lineups, the 2008 Beijing Olympic squad that reclaimed gold after the Americans finished third in 2004 and the 2010 world championship squad that won the title at Istanbul. LeBron James, coming off his first NBA title with Miami, will be joined by ...
