WHERE'S Germany's Plan B? The question came up during the second half of the European soccer cup semifinal match last week between Italy and Germany at a moment when the Germans were losing 2-0 and looking thwarted - but not changing tactics. Bixente Lizarazu, a former French...
EUROPE'S GREAT ILLUSION
OVER the past few months I've read a number of optimistic assessments of the prospects for Europe. Oddly, however, none of these assessments argue that Europe's German-dictated formula of redemption through suffering has any chance of working. Instead, the case for optimism is that failure - in particular, a breakup of ...

Rayyan looks to surpass semis jinx in AFC Futsal
AL RAYYAN´S Spanish tactician Juan Antonio is adamant that his team needs an excellent all-round performance against Uzbekistan powerhouse Ardus on Thursday to get past the semi-final for the first time in the club´s history. Al Rayyan suffered a heartbreaking 6-5 extra-time semi-final loss at home in 2011 against Iran´s Shahid Mansouri. Lebanon´s Al Sadaka inflicted more misery by beating them in the penalty shootout after the third place playoff finished 4-4 and that loss deprived an automatic berth for Qatar league champions in the 2012 finals. "We are up against one of the best sides in the tournament, so a high concentration and discipline is needed on Thursday against Ardus," he said. "We played them in the qualifiers ...
