Libya's Civil War
THE past month has been a tumultuous one for Libya. Successful local elections in Benghazi, in which voter turnout was impressive and a female candidate secured the largest number of votes, showed that the country can move towards becoming a state with viable democratic processes and representative...
NO AUSTERITY IN AMERICA
HOPE springs eternal. For a few hours I was ready to applaud Mitt Romney for speaking honestly about what his calls for smaller government actually mean. Never mind. Soon the candidate was being his normal self, denying having said what he said and serving...

WISE Book 2012 to be launched in November

JOSEPH VARGHESE

DOHA IN its constant effort to champion innovation in education across the globe, World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) will this year come out with a book focusing on the role of innovation in altering the relationship between education and workforce.

The volume, WISE Book 2012, to be published during the three-day annual WISE summit in Doha in November, is expected to be a highly engaging book for the general reader.

Expected to instigate new debates, creative thinking and practical action amongst the world’s most influential figures, the book will be published by Bloomsbury and focus on detailed case studies and inspiring personal stories.

These instances are centred around 14 high-impact innovative projects drawn from all over the world.

This year’s publication will tell a powerful and very timely story about the potential of innovation to transform the complex relationship between education, learning, work and the workforce.

The details of the stories are narrated through weaving together statistical data, interview material, project case studies and photographic illustrations. It will explore how the interface between work and learning is changing due to issues such as globalization, economic recession, new technologies and shifting demographics.

WISE publications aim to further the WISE Initiative’s commitment to inspire, support and spread innovative thinking and best practices in education.

The 2012 WISE Book will highlight the relationship between education and the workforce. WISE has commissioned Valerie Hannon and her team from the UKbased Innovation Unit and award-winning photographer Reza Deghati to work on this year’s edition.

This year’s edition follows the successful launch of the first WISE Book ‘Innovation in Education: Lessons from Pioneers around the World’ written by Charles Leadbeater and illustrated by Romain Staros Staropoli in collaboration with Bloomsbury.

The first WISE publication described 16 pioneering projects, almost all of which have been winners or finalists of the WISE Awards that had succeeded in transforming people’s lives through education.

It also looked at some of the common features of innovation, how innovation happens, and when and how to scale up. The WISE Book also brought to light the stories of how the initiatives developed and grew to benefit both learners and communities.
