Europe's Democratic Crisis
IF proof were needed of the maxim that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, the economic crisis in Europe provides it. The worthy but narrow intentions of the European Union's policy makers have been inadequate for a ...

Bolt opens European season with 100m win
USAIN Bolt opened his European track season here on Friday by clocking 10.04sec in the 100m after a dreadful start at the second time of asking and into a -0.8m/s headwind. The double sprint gold medallist from the 2008 Beijing Games overcame his laborious start to show all his power from the 50m mark, the long-legged Jamaican opening up in impressive style to the line. Veteran Kim Collins of St Kitts and St Nevis came second in 10.19sec with American Darivs Patton third in 10.22. As introductions were made on the stadium big screen, reggae music booming, Bolt danced, played air guitar and generally goofed around for the benefit of a capacity 20,000- strong crowd at the Vitkovice City Stadium in this eastern Czech city. When the screams and whistles died down, Bolt, wearing luminous green spikes and loose blue singlet over grey camouflage shorts, settled in his blocks after crossing himself and looking skywards. But then South African Simon Magakwe false started to ruin the suspense, with the crowd on their feet all around the stadium in anticipation. ...
Heat beats Pacers, enters East finals
MIAMI stars Dwyane Wade and LeBron James combined for 69 points to lead the Heat to a 105-93 win over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday, completing a 4-2 series win and booking a place in the NBA Eastern Conference finals. Wade scored 41 points and James had 28 to complete an extraordinary succession of games in which the pair combined to haul Miami to victories and salvage a season that looked like ending prematurely. Indiana had led the series 2-1, with a home game to come, but then the big two — injured Chris Bosh was absent from the star trio — took over. James scored 98 points, grabbed 34 rebounds and dished out 24 assists over three games while Wade had 99 points, 22 rebounds and 11 assists. "In the regular season, we've had some good games," Wade said. "But I don't know if we've ever had three in a row like that in the playoffs." Next for the Heat will be a finals series against either Boston or Philadelphia, but on James and Wade's current form, Miami will be favorite to beat anyone. ...
Djokovic finds Federer in way of making history
NOVAK Djokovic's bid to become the first man in 43 years to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time hit its first hurdle on Friday when Roger Federer became a potential French Open semi-final opponent. In stark contrast, defending champion Rafael Nadal, bidding for an historic seventh title, was left with a more comfortable passage with third seed Andy Murray, who is struggling with a back injury, as a possible semifinal rival. World number one Djokovic, three times a semifinalist in Paris, is the top seed at Roland Garros with Federer, the 2009 champion, seeded three and Friday's draw pitted them in the same, imposing section. Djokovic starts against Italy's Potito Starace and could face Australia's former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, playing in Paris on a wildcard, in the second round. Adding spice to the top half of the draw is the presence of dangerous Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 US Open winner, who could face Federer in the fourth round. ...
