Europe's Democratic Crisis
IF proof were needed of the maxim that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, the economic crisis in Europe provides it. The worthy but narrow intentions of the European Union's policy makers have been inadequate for a ...

55 years later, On the Road is finally a movie

FIFTY-FIVE years after its publication, Jack Kerouac's On the Road is finally out on the big screen. Everyone from Marlon Brando to Jean-Luc Godard to Brad Pitt has circled the classic 1957 novel over the last six decades, but Walter Salles' adaptation is the first to actually get made. ....

Friends who made fortune from friendship bands
LIKE many kids, Stacy Herzog learned to make friendship bracelets at summer camp when she was growing up in Colorado. And as an adult, she forgot all about them until she and best friend Sarah Reid took a trip to Ecuador three years ago. They saw people everywhere wearing the bracelets, and it rekindled their interest in the colourful, woven designs. So they started making their own. But Herzog, now 26, and Reid wanted a little more bling on their wrists and necks than they did as children. They experimented and began mixing the bracelets with vintage jewellery from the collections that had been handed down from their grandmothers. Both were working in the fashion industry in New York, and it wasn't long before their creations caught notice. In February 2010, a photographer for Women's Wear Daily stopped the pair on the street to praise their bracelet designs, snapped a photo of them and it was published in the trade journal. Their phones started ringing, and two days later, "we quit our jobs and started doing this full time,'' Herzog said on a recent trip to Denver. ....
Pre-term births on the rise
PREMATURE birth is the biggest cause of infant mortality worldwide, yet most of those deaths could be readily prevented, according to a report from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and child-health advocacy groups. The report summarises the results of a comprehensive survey of the problem, and says that pre-term births are on the rise – a worrying trend – but that low-income countries could reduce deaths among these infants by introducing a few affordable key health-care practices. Premature babies, defined as those born before 37 weeks' gestation, have higher rates of death and serious illness in the days and weeks after birth than do babies born at term, and are also more likely to be left with life-long disabilities such as blindness and cerebral palsy. The report discusses estimates of the pre-term birth rates and associated infant mortality for most of the countries in the world; the data, which cover 184 countries, are presented in two papers under review at The Lancet. ..
Scientology-inspired film upsets Tom Cruise
FILMMAKER Paul Thomas Anderson has screened his new film about a Scientology-like sect leader for Tom Cruise, one of Scientology's most famous followers, in the hopes of heading off a conflict with the group. According to two individuals close to the movie, Anderson recently screened the film, loosely based on the life of Scientology-founder L Ron Hubbard, for Cruise. Both individuals said that Cruise "had issues" with some parts of the movie. Cruise starred in one of Anderson's earlier movies, Magnolia, and the two remain friends. The film is set to be released in October. The Church of Scientology, which vigorously defends itself from outside critics, has many followers among Hollywood stars, including actor John Travolta. One of the individuals close to the movie said that the Weinstein Company also intended to show the film to Travolta. The movie has not yet been screened, so its full plot and tone is not yet known. Weinstein released the trailer from the Cannes Film Festival on Monday. ...
