Indian ghazal singer to perform tomorrow

TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK

DOHA EMINENT ghazal singer Shreyas M Patkar will perform at a concert at Doha’s Skills Development Centre in New Salata, from 6 pm onwards, on Saturday.

Among those accompanying him will be tabla maestro Santosh Kulkarni. Kulkarni, a PhD in Hindustani music, also teaches tabla at the Centre.

Both Shreyas and Santosh hail from Mumbai and are trained musicians who have enthralled Doha’s music lovers on many occasions in the past. Some such music treats were organised by Gujarathi Samaj, Maharashta Mandal and Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) in Qatar.

On Saturday, Shreyas will lend voice to a selection of ghazals sung by music stalwarts like Mehandi Hasan, Ghulam Ali and Talat Aziz, among others.

He will also pay his musical tribute to the legendary ghazal singer late Jagjit Singh, who died recently.

As a ghazal singer, Shreyas is known for expressing a variety of moods in keeping with the underlying meaning of the lyrics and that perhaps was why he was honoured as the ‘best performer’ at a VIP musical evening organised by the ICC in 2009.
