Qatargas focuses on youth in energy sector

TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK

DOHA QATARGAS sponsored the ‘Young Members Activities’, held as part of the 2012 Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) International Production and Operations Conference and Exhibition (POCE) which concluded on Wednesday.

The POCE was held at the Qatar National Convention Centre under the patronage of the Minister of Energy and Industry HE Dr Mohammad bin Saleh al Sada.

The Young Members Activities kicked off with a Student Chapters Officers Workshop, which was attended by around 80 students from different parts of the world.

The workshop was aimed at giving the students a clear understanding of the oil and gas industry to allow them to return to their universities and colleges with a positive message to relate to their fellow students. It was also aimed at providing opportunities for students to form new friendships and to work together on joint activities.

The students interacted with a number of major industry employers who are on the look-out for recruiting the best talent.

Commenting on Qatargas’ sponsorship of the workshop, Qatargas Public Relations Manager Mansour Rashid al Naimi said: “We look at our support to such events as a platform to raise the level of awareness among the students about the oil and gas industry in general and about Qatargas in particular. The students who attended the workshop came from various countries in the Middle East, North Africa and India. As leaders in the LNG business, we are constantly looking to attract qualified professionals to enrich our talent pool. We believe that such events are beneficial for both parties – the students as well as organisations.” During the workshop, Qatargas Surveillance Division Manager Ibrahim Bawazir gave a presentation on Qatargas.

Also representing Qatargas at the workshop was Head of Qatarisation and National Development Adnan al Shaibi, who spoke about the general recruitment procedures, employment opportunities and career development programmes available in Qatargas.

Hessa Mohamed al Nesf, a chemical engineer with Qatargas, was a member of the Steering Committee of the ‘Young Members’ Activities programme.

During the three-day conference, Qatargas Assets Maintenance Division Manager Jassim Abdulla al Mohannadi delivered a presentation titled ‘Maintenance Strategy in Local Context at the panel session on ‘Operations and Maintenance Strategies to Optimise Value’.

James Baldwin, an environmental manager and Mohsin Raja, a senior environmental engineer, also spoke at the event.

The SPE International POCE, set to take place in May during even years, complements the SPE Production and Operations Symposium, which has been running successfully for the past 30 years in Oklahoma during odd years. Beginning with the 2012 edition, Qatar, will be the permanent home for the SPE.
