Tipsarevic beats Djokovic in Madrid Masters
MADRID WORLD number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic was knocked out of the Madrid Masters on Friday, losing 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 to Serb compatriot Janko Tipsarevic. Djokovic's quarter-final defeat comes a day after world number two Rafael Nadal was defeated by fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the third round. Roger Federer, the 16-time Grand Slam champion, who faces Spain's David Ferrer later on Friday, could move to second in the world behind Djokovic should he win the title on Sunday. Tipsarevic earned only his second career win against Djokovic, who beat him last February in a quarter-final in Dubai. Meanwhile, top seed Victoria Azarenka saw off China's Li Na with a battling 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win to reach the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters on Friday. The Belarusian world number one will now play either Agnieszka Radwanska, the Polish fourth seed, or American qualifier Varvara Lepchenko. ...

Plenty at stake in La Liga final pairings
MADRID THE Spanish league season reaches its climax on Sunday and, while Real Madrid has already wrapped up the title, there is plenty still to play for at both ends of the table. Madrid ended Barcelona's run of three consecutive championships by clinching the 32nd Liga crown of its history with three rounds of games remaining, but Jose Mourinho's side will still have plenty of motivation for its final game of the season at home to Mallorca. If it wins on Sunday, it will break a new Spanish league record in reaching the 100- point mark - Barcelona holding the record of 99 set in 2009/10. Meanwhile, Barcelona go to Betis on Saturday with Lionel Messi looking to take the 'pichichi' award as La Liga's top scorer — currently on 50, he is five ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. Valencia will finish third and is guaranteed Champions League football again next season, but the remaining European places are still up for grabs. Two points clear in fourth, Malaga can seal Spain's final Champions League berth by beating Sporting Gijon at a sold-out La Rosaleda. ...
