Rupee breaches 53-mark
THE Indian rupee washed out all of its initial gains and went below 53-mark after almost four months, but recovered some ground to close at 52.96/97 against the US currency, down by 23 paise. Strong dollar overseas amid expectations of more capital outflows in the wake of uncertain local equities also weighed on the rupee, a forex dealer said.
23 killed in fresh Syria violence
AT least 23 people, including 21 soldiers, were killed on Wednesday in clashes between opposition rebels and Syrian troops, according to opposition activists. Rebels, fighting to oust the regime of President Bashar al Assad, killed 15 security personnel in an ambush in the northern province of Aleppo. Six other soldiers were killed in clashes on the outskirts of Damascus. Two civilians who were caught in the crossfire were also killed.
