Detective queries why MI6 kept dead spy’s belogings
AP
LONDON A SENIOR detective has expressed surprise that British spy services did not give police items belonging to a spy whose naked body was found locked in a sports bag.
Gareth Williams worked for Britain’s secret eavesdropping service GCHQ but was attached to the MI6 overseas spy agency when his body was found in the bathtub of his London apartment in August 2010.
Police have suggested Williams’ death may have been due to a sexual encounter gone awry, but his relatives insist it must have been related to his work.
Detective Chief Inspector Jackie Sebire, who led the investigation, told the inquest on Tuesday that she would’ve expected MI6 to tell her in 2010 about memory sticks and a gym bag it had found in Williams office, but that she hadn’t learned of the items until this week.
