It was meeting in Doha at an appropriate time with an emphasis on sustainable development. Addressing a special session of Unctad, he said that he had been raising the issues concerning the developing countries at the UN General Assembly from time to time. “From my own position as president of the General Assembly, I have a high level of regard for the efforts which Unctad invests into issues of sustainable development.
Unctad occupies a unique position in the UN organisational structure and concerns itself with issues which are relevant to the majority of UN member states, specifically those which are considered developing countries, ” he said. He further said “Let me then reiterate and emphasise the singular role of Unctad conference, which addresses some of the most urgent concerns of developing nations, and with the fulfilment of their peoples’ most basic wants.
” Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage and President of the Unctad XIII conference HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al Kuwari moderated the session which was also attended by Unctad Secretary General Supachai Panitchpakdi and President of Inter-Parliamentary Union Abdelwahad Radi.
