Guns fall silent in Syria
A FRAGILE cease-fire brokered by the UN took hold in Syria on Thursday with regime forces apparently halting widespread attacks on the opposition but still defying demands by international envoy Kofi Annan to pull back troops. Annan’s plan calls for the deployment of international observers and talks on a political transition once a truce is in place.
Rupee down 16 paise
QTHE Indian rupee on Thursday fell by 16 paise to close at 51.58/59 against the US currency on fresh dollar demand from importers and some banks despite firm local equity markets. At the Inerbank Foreign Exchange market, the domestic unit opened higher at 51.39/40 a dollar from overnight close of 51.42/43 and immediately touched a high of 51.25.
