Indian Oil seeks LNG from Qatar, Gazprom
STATE-RUN Indian Oil Corp is in talks with BG Group, Qatar and Gazprom to secure long-term liquefied natural gas supplies for an import terminal it is building to feed its rising energy demand. But while it talks to potential suppliers, the company is also keeping its options open to initially import LNG through spot or shorter-term contracts on expectations that India may lift pr i ce controls on the power and fertiliser sectors and allow them to pass on feedstock costs to consumers. Brazil oil workers file suit against Chevron
BRAZIL´S largest oil workers union filed a civil lawsuit against oil company Chevron and drilling firm Transocean that seeks to cancel their rights to operate in the offshore oil field where they suffered an oil spill last November. The case, brought by the FUP oil workers federation in federal court, raises the stakes for Chevron and Transocean, which are already fighting criminal and civil charges in Brazil that could carry jail terms for their employees and damages of about $11 billion. BRICS targets joint bank, exchange ties at summit
THE BRICS group of emerging world powerhouses - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - is expected to launch plans this week for a joint development bank and measures to bring their stock exchanges closer together. Officials say the initiatives will take time as they need to sort out details. But they herald a new level of ambition for a bloc that brings together about half the world´s people. The Middle East and energy security will also be discussed, officials say. The BRIC acronym was coined in 2001 by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O´Neill, who was searching for a catchy way to encapsulate the broader shift in global economic growth towards emerging markets.
