Oil drilling platform evacuated after gas leak
AFP
LONDON More than 230 workers on a North Sea platform have been evacuated following a gas leak, its operators said on Monday.
The leak was on the Elgin PUQ platform, an oil and gas facility about 150 miles (240 kilometres) off Aberdeen on Scotland’s east coast.
Total E and P UK, which operates the platform, said all 238 personnel had been accounted for and no injuries had been reported.
The bulk of the crew were evacuated soon after the leak was discovered, leaving 19 essential personnel on the rig, but they too were later taken to safety.
“A total of 150 nonessential personnel have now been returned to Aberdeen and a further 69 non-essential crew remain safe offshore on neighbouring installations. A surveillance plane was in the area following reports of a sheen on the water,” a statement from the company said.
