Rebuilding Egypt
ON most days, there's a deceptive normalcy to Tahrir Square, centre stage of Egypt's 2011 revolution. Traffic, not protesters, paralyses the streets. But politics are still roiling. This is a crucial period for Egypt. Between now and July 1 ...

QATAR has emerged as the major economic hub because of diversification and fresh investments in vital sectors, said Minister of Energy and Industry His Excellency Dr Mohammad bin Saleh al Sada. He was speaking at the 10th International Cement Trade and Industry Conference (Interchem) on Monday.

As many as 47 countries are taking part in Interchem Doha 2012. Established in 1985, this is the second time that Doha is holding the conference, with the previous one held way back in 2009.

“Qatar’s growth has come with the realisation of economic diversification and active participation of the public and private sectors,” Sada said. He said the government had created an ideal environment for the business community and investors to engage in public, private partnership (PPP) projects.

“We have paid special attention to development of the legally healthy and viable environment for the investment,” the energy minister added.

According to Sada, Qatar has become the focus of attention of many Arab and foreign companies because of the investment opportunities available in the country and the incentives provided to them.

Commenting on the impact of globalisation, Sada said, “Global economy underlines the importance of adopting policies that encourage investment which ultimately leads to the development of the national economy.” He said efforts should be made for more effective use of available resources and achieve economic returns and social welfare.

On the subject of Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup, Sada said the infrastructure and construction projects associated with this event would be for the betterment of human life.

Speaking about the importance of the cement conference, Sada said that the event provided a platform to promote networking opportunities among interested members of the participating countries.

The conference is expected to discuss a number of issues related to the cement industry and the upcoming challenges, specially in light of tightening environmental laws limiting the establishment of new cement factories.
