Egypt presidential elections to be held in May
EGYPT’s first presidential elections since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak, will be held at the end of May, the state-owned Al Ahram daily reported on Wednesday. Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Local Development Mohammed Attiya said that the elections will be held at the end of May but that the date would be set by the elections committee.
Assad sets Feb 26 date for referendum on constitutions
SYRIA’s president has called a referendum on a new constitution that would effectively end nearly five decades of single party rule, state media said on Wednesday. Bashar al Assad called the national vote for February 26, in a move to placate growing global outrage over the bloodshed. Under the newly drafted charter, freedom is “a sacred right” and “the people will govern the people” in a multi-party democratic system, state television said.
