Merri, Arabi discuss judicial reforms

IHSAN YOUSSEF

DOHA ATTORNEY General (AG) of Qatar Ali bin Fetais al Merri met on Tuesday Arab League Secretary- General Nabil al Arabi. During the meeting they discussed the Arab League’s support for the independence of judiciary in the Arab world, including the independence of public prosecutions, principle of judicial independence and separation of judicial and executive powers as part of the ongoing reforms in the region.

He underlined the need for greater Arab League support for Arab attorney- generals and their annual meeting.

He urged that the meeting be held at the Arab League headquarters in order to give impetus to their work. He pointed out that Qatar’s support for an independent judiciary in the Arab world stemmed from the realisation that a just and independent judiciary constituted the backbone of a civil society.

Challenges currently facing Arab countries and their impact, besides importance of the independence and integrity of the judicial systems, were also reviewed. Al Merri expressed Qatar’s readiness to cooperate with the Arab League in providing training courses in judicial domains through the Rule of Law and Anticorruption Centre set up recently in Doha, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme.
