Practicality scores over glamour
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK RIDING boots and smoking slippers have emerged as two of the most popular footwear trends of 2011 among various retailers, although labels including Charlotte Olympia have bucked the trend, noting the demand for sky high heels. A report in Women's Wear Daily, sees retailers including Zappos.com, Chinese Laundry and Piperlime discussing their most successful styles of 2011. Despite Charlotte Olympia's placing "super high heels" in the most successful category, Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com, told the publication that brands specialising in practical attire such as Ugg, Hunter Boots and Frye had "continued to be very strong." Chinese Laundry also noted the popularity of boots, adding consumers were eager to purchases pieces with versatility. "It was probably flat boots or riding boots and pumps. I think the consumer was really looking at what had multiple uses," explained the brand's CEO Bob Goldman. Although Piperlime.com noted the "consistent growth of the wedge heel", the company agreed that the riding boot has been a "steady staple" in 2011. ...
Spinal manipulation, home exercise may ease neck pain
SERENA GORDON NYT SYNDICATE SPINAL manipulation and home exercise are more effective at relieving neck pain in the long term than medications, according to new research. People undergoing spinal manipulation therapy for neck pain also reported greater satisfaction than people receiving medication or doing home exercises. "We found that there are some viable treatment options for neck pain," said Gert Bronfort, vice-president of research at the Wolfe-Harris Centre for Clinical Studies at Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington. "What we don't really know yet is how to individualise these treatments for each particular patient. All are probably still viable treatment options, but what we don't know is what each particular patient will need," Bronfort said, adding that it's possible a combination of treatments might be helpful, too. Results of the study are published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Neck pain is an extremely common problem. About three-quarters of adults report having neck pain at some point in their lives, according to background information in the study. Neck pain is responsible for millions of health care visits each year, and it can have a negative impact on quality of life. ...
My body betrays me: Demi Moore
REUTERS ACTRESS Demi Moore, who recently ended her six-year marriage to Ashton Kutcher, says her worst fear is finding she is "not worthy of being loved". In an interview conducted just one week after Moore filed for divorce in November, the Ghost star opened up to her friend, British photographer Amanda De Cadenet, for the February edition of Harper's Bazaar magazine. Moore, 49, did not directly address her split with Kutcher, the 33-year-old star of television comedy Two and A Half Men. The marriage foundered after a San Diego woman went public about a brief fling she had with Kutcher. But in a wide-ranging conversation with De Cadenet about insecurities, Moore said; "What scares me is that I'm going to ultimately find out at the end of my life that I'm really not lovable, that I'm not worthy of being loved. That there's something fundamentally wrong with me...and that I wasn't wanted here in the first place." The marriage was Moore's third, and the 16- year age difference between her and Kutcher made them the subject of constant media attention. ...
