Al Jazeera English documentary wins Rory Peck award
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK DOHA LIBYAN-BORN filmmaker Abdallah Omeish has won the 2011 Rory Peck award for features for his exclusive Al Jazeera English film – Libya: Through the fire. Abdallah Omeish travelled to Benghazi in February 2011, capturing chaotic scenes of local people under attack by the Qadhafi regime and the fear on the faces of captured mercenaries. The centerpiece of the film, however, is the story of Mohammed Nabbous – the first person to report on events within Libya in English and Arabic. Abdallah’s film follows Nabbous from his first attempts to set up an independent satellite TV station to his eventual death when he was shot and killed whilst filming. The judges described the film as “moving and powerful”, adding that Mohammed Nabbous embodied the story of the Arab Spring.
