We must emulate Maathai´s green deeds: Kenyan envoy
AS the world continues to mourn the death of Nobel Laureate for Peace Wangari Maathai, Kenyan Ambassador to Qatar HE Galma Mukhe Boru advised the people to follow her example and learn from her life. Professor Maathai, who passed away on September 25, was the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace...
Mad Hatter´s Tea Party
CURIOSER and curioser, as Alice said in her adventures in Wonderland. The longer the crisis in the eurozone has gone on, the more it has come to resemble something penned by Lewis Carroll. Here are just a few of the surreal aspects of the current state of affairs. The answer to a lack of growth in struggling countries such as Greece is austerity of such ferocity that recessions deepen. The solution to a...
HOLDING CHINA TO ACCOUNT
THE dire state of the world economy reflects destructive actions on the part of many players. Still, the fact that so many have behaved badly shouldn´t stop us from holding individual bad actors to account. And that´s what Senate leaders will be doing this week, as they take up legislation that would threaten sanctions against China and other currency manipulators. Respectable opinion is aghast. But respectable opinion has...

Qtel to invest QR200mn in 4G network

ASIF IQBAL

DOHA QATARTelecom (Qtel) will invest over QR200 million in its initiative to deliver the fastest and largest 4G network, its chief operating officer said, on Tuesday.

“Our long-term evolution (LTE) programme is aimed at delivering the best penetration for 4G coverage in the GCC region,” Waleed al Sayed said at the launch of the LTE programme on Tuesday. He also said the LTE programme’s implementation will begin immediately which would add to the strength and speed of Qtel’s broadband network.

“Nearly 900 base stations will be set up in Qatar. Qtel plans to improve mobile broadband Internet services in 4G coverage areas, and will offer download speed of as much as 150 mbps on mobile phones,” Sayed said.

“Based on trials we are now positioned to build the largest 4G network, offering fast speed and comprehensive coverage”.

Did Qtel receive the spectrum from ictQatar? “We will be requiring new frequency for this.

We have submitted our request to ictQatar,” said Sayed The LTE programme is a wireless broadband technology that supports roaming Internet access via cell phones. It seamlessly interworks with 2G and 3G networks.

“Because of the significant improvements in download speed and quality, it has been called the ‘fourth generation’ (4G) technology,” he said.

Qtel has been a pioneer in testing this technology. “We completed the test phase with two potential vendors in July, which was quite successful,” Sayed added.

Will 4G network be for all users? During the roll-out, 4G coverage would be provided as an option in several areas, starting with Doha, Sayed said.

On the benefits of the LTE, he said Qtel is already working with businesses and educational institutions to ensure that all sectors of the community are able to benefit from the enhanced speed and reliability of LTE technology, as part of the Broadband Qatar strategy.

He said studies have shown that broadband roll-outs can make a direct impact on the GDP and exam performance of students.
