Doha ´city centre´ part of history
THE high sales pitch of the shop-owners and the flurry of activity among shoppers, trying to drive a smart bargain at Musheireb (popularly called National), Souq Ahmed bin Abdullah and the markets in the lanes and bylanes of the area seen over the last one week or so are like the flicker of a lamp´s flame before it dies out in a storm. The traders are resorting to distress clearance of their stocks as the deadline.
Europe´s Real Problems
WHEN the history of the 21st century is written people will ask why it was that Europe was found wanting during its most intractable economic crisis. They will ask why Europe slept as an undercapitalised banking system floundered, unemployment remained unacceptably high, and the Continent´s growth and competitiveness plummeted. Worse still, if a reconstruction plan does not come soon, Europe´s leaders will be charged with "the decline of...
NO, WE CAN´T? OR WON´T?
IF you were shocked by Friday´s job report, if you thought we were doing well and were taken aback by the bad news, you haven´t been paying attention. The fact is, the United States economy has been stuck in a rut for a year and a half. Yet a destructive passivity has overtaken our discourse. Turn on your TV and you´ll see some self-satisfied pundit declaring that nothing much can be done about the economy´s short...

Gunmen abduct 3 US tourists in Philippines

REUTERS

MANILA GUNMEN in the Philippines kidnapped three people early on Tuesday, including a naturalised American woman and her 14-year-old son, police said.

The gunmen stormed a beach house on Tictabon island, near the southern port city of Zamboanga, and took three holidaymakers, city police chief Edwin de Ocampo told reporters.

The island is in the Philippines’ troubled south where Islamist militants and Muslim separatists are active.

De Ocampo said 14 armed men in two boats arrived around 3 am on Tuesday (1900 GMT) and overpowered unarmed guards.

They took Gerfa Yeatts Lunsmann, 50, her son Kevin Eric, and a nephew, Romnick Jackaria, 19.

“We’re still tracking down the gunmen and find out where they took their captives,” de Ocampo said, adding the woman’s husband, a German national, has been notified about the abduction.

The Lunsmanns are from Virginia and were on vacation with some relatives on the island.

They were due to return home this week after two weeks in the Philippines, de Ocampo said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction.

There are a number of Muslim rebel groups operating in the area where the kidnapping took place, de Ocampo said.

The small but violent Islamic militant group Abu Sayyaf and the largest Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), are both active in the area.

Bandits and gunsfor- hire are also common.

The Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf is holding half a dozen captives, including a Malaysian and an Indian national, on Basilan and Jolo islands.

Last month the United States, United Kingdom and Australia warned their citizens against travelling to restive areas in the southern Philippines, particularly resorts and dive sites in Basilan, Jolo, and Tawi-tawi areas, due to threats of abduction and bomb attacks.
