Celebrating A Killing
MAN is shot in the head, and joyous celebrations break out 7,000 miles A away. Although Americans are in full agreement that the demise of Osama bin Laden is a good thing, many are disturbed by the revelry. We should seek justice, not vengeance, they urge. Doesn´t this lower us to "their" level? Didn´t the Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr say, "I will mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy"? (No, he did not, but the Twitter users who popularised that misattributed quotation last week found it inspiring nonetheless.) Why are so many Americans...
THE FORCE OF THE DEED
WATCHING the talk shows, thinking about the tumultuous last American decade, reflecting on the death of Osama bin Laden, I feel grateful for many things but not least this: the invisibility of the heroes. For once it is the deed itself that speaks. The deed, so often lost in this age of celebrities and reality shows and Donald Trump´s monumental ego, stands unadorned. In its daring, its professionalism and its effectiveness, the deed is there, making words look cheap. The deed was that of the 79 US commandos, who have met with their commander-in-chief, President Obama, and who are known to one another, but are unknown to us. For secrecy is their covenant. Dispatched from Jalalabad, Afghanistan...

TOP global steelmaker ArcelorMittal said on Wednesday its first quarter net profit rebounded to $1.07 billion (744 million euros) following a setback at the end of last year due to exceptional items. The company, by far the biggest steelmaker by volume, said it expected profitability to improve further in the second quarter due to increased seasonal factors and increased underlying demand. The group reported a loss for the last quarter of 2010 because of costs arising from the sale of its stainless steel division. In the comparable first quarter of last year it made a net profit of $640 million. "As anticipated, we have seen a stronger start to the year...
Hotel occupancy rate in Qatar to stay high even after 2022 WC:Khaddouri
HOTEL occupancy in Qatar will continue to be at substantial levels even after the 2022 World Cup is over as the country is fast emerging as a sports, education and tourism hub, a senior hotelier has said. "With massive investments being made in education, sports and tourism, there will be considerable influx of people to Qatar beyond the football world cup to provide the hotel industry with sufficient business," Chief Operating Officer of Rotana Hotel, Omer Khaddouri told Qatar Tribune at a function on Wednesday. Asked if the number of hotels coming up in the country for the 2022 world cup will affect the demand and supply equation after the mega event.
RETURN TO SPENDING AND THE FRONT ROWS
Business travelers are back, and the airlines are eager to court them again. Whether they are small-business owners, sales representatives or corporate executives, business travelers these days are more often found at the front of the plane than at the back, where cuts in travel budgets confined them during the recession. The restrictive company policies that banned business-class travel, limited lodging to three-star hotels and replaced threeday sales conferences in Las Vegas with virtual meetings via conference calls have all but disappeared. The years of chasing costs have given way to a rebound in travel as the economy picks up. The airlines have...
