Celebrating A Killing
MAN is shot in the head, and joyous celebrations break out 7,000 miles A away. Although Americans are in full agreement that the demise of Osama bin Laden is a good thing, many are disturbed by the revelry. We should seek justice, not vengeance, they urge. Doesn´t this lower us to "their" level? Didn´t the Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr say, "I will mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy"? (No, he did not, but the Twitter users who popularised that misattributed quotation last week found it inspiring nonetheless.) Why are so many Americans...
THE FORCE OF THE DEED
WATCHING the talk shows, thinking about the tumultuous last American decade, reflecting on the death of Osama bin Laden, I feel grateful for many things but not least this: the invisibility of the heroes. For once it is the deed itself that speaks. The deed, so often lost in this age of celebrities and reality shows and Donald Trump´s monumental ego, stands unadorned. MOUSHUMI DAS CHAUDHURY

DOHA THE next round of construction boom in Qatar will begin in right earnest in a couple of years.

That, at least, is what the sector professionals expect.

Chief Technical Officer of HBK Contracting R Vedhachalam, is one of the many who hold the view.

“I am highly optimistic that the real construction boom will begin in Qatar in 2013.

The ongoing projects will also move at the same speed as before,” he told Qatar Tribune recently.

The HBK Group, one of the largest contracting companies in Qatar which started off as HBK Contracting Company Vedhachalam also believes there will be ample of work to keep construction companies in Qatar engaged for a long time.

“We are looking forward to various infrastructure related projects, construction of stadiums, hotels as we have already built various residential towers in Qatar like Jassim Tower, Mansoora Tower among others.

Our diversified functions means clients can find majority of services like electromechanical works, aluminium glazing works, readymix concrete, precast construction, drilling and blasting works, industrial coating & insulation works,” he said.

“We are also involved in big projects like Dohaland- Museireb properties and hope to get more of such projects in the future.

Our group is also interested in the metro projects and will bid for that when the time comes, he added.” Regarding the development in Qatar, Vedhachalam said: “Qatar has seen the growing pains experienced by its rapidly developing neighbours and has recognised that opportunities exist to improve the quality of life of its citizens through planned infrastructure management and traffic and transport co-ordination.

Qatar has a huge business potential and there is a hunger for fresh ideas and willingness to modify and change the actual structure of the city.” “The most exciting thing about projects in Qatar for us is that the fact that so many of them relate to the various services our company offers including power cleaning, offshore maintenance, blasting and painting among others.

It is also great to be part of expansion of a nice city like Doha and in the preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2022,” he concluded.
