Renewable energy, key to future needs: Wood
WITH abundant sunlight available across GCC countries for most of the day, they must make efforts to make maximum use of the potential to generate power, Siemens Renewable Energy Division Regional Director Adrian Wood has said. Talking to Qatar Tribune recently, Wood said that global power consumption will increase from the present 20,300 TWh to...
Egypt´s Fledgling Democracy
IN Cairo last week I found myself buying a couple of "I love Egypt" T-shirts. When a woman came up to me and, with much the same solemn pushiness as a squeegee merchant, began to paint the colours of the Egyptian flag on my hand, I did not resist. Speakers in one corner were working up a thin crowd, promising retribution for the ancien regime, justice to the masses. Indifferent to them...

In the age of digital music, vinyl gets second life
IN an industrial and uninviting stretch of Brooklyn, near several strip clubs and a factory that makes electrical tubing, Thomas Bernich´s small plant recycles vinyl and preserves a fading piece of history. In fact, Bernich´s workplace in Sunset Park is one of the few of its kind in New York City and in the country. Inside the one-story, red-brick factory on 42nd Street, boxes of discarded albums from used-record stores are piled high on wooden pallets, awaiting their end and a new beginning. The records are tossed into a large shredder to start the process of putting music on them again. The used vinyl is eventually fed into a press that creates new albums...
Johnny Depp speaks out on Pirates franchise
Q. It´s been four years since the third Pirates. What happened? A. Had I had a little more control at the wheel early on, I would have spaced them out more. One of the reasons On Stranger Tides took this amount of time was to really focus on what we could do to make it interesting and new and fresh and not just rehash the same old jokes. Was it right to shoot the previous two back-toback? The second and third parts were tacked on, in a way. It wasn´t initially written as a trilogy, so the writers had to find the mathematics to connect all three — and in doing that, there were subplots and sub-subplots, and it got confusing and a bit complicated. I said, "Look...
Big B wants a Harley Davidson!
AFTER riding what he calls the "beast bike" for Bbuddah - Hoga Tera Baap, megastar Amitabh Bachchan is eager to buy his own Harley Davidson. "What is it with men and the sound of a mean machine. The roar of a speed car, the rush of air and sound in a double exhaust bike, that kick of acceleration as you push the pedal flat, that jerk of change on the Concord, when it was functional, as it went from normal to Mach 3 at 55,000 feet in the air! Is it the same with the ladies too?" Amitabh wrote on his blog bigb.bigadda.com. "Soon after it was the adrenaline pumping beast bike, the Harley ´twixt my legs. And what a monster it is. I have to say though that having...
