UK Monarchy: How Relevant?
AMID the flag-waving and the street parties to celebrate the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton on Friday, bigger questions about the relevance of the monarchy to modern Britain lurk like uninvited guests. Extravagant living in a time of austerity abrades public sensibilities; unearned privilege is resented, while snobbery and elitism are seen as dangerously outmoded.
THE PRICE OF DELUSION
COL Moamar Qadhafi is a vain man. Like the other Arab dinosaurs he has his dyed hair, his designer shades, his spoiled children and his compound full of sycophants. He doesn´t want, one day, to be dragged from a rat hole like Saddam Hussein or hauled from a bunker like the Ivory Coast´s Laurent Gbagbo. So what´s his calculation? Does he have one at all? Here in liberated eastern Libya, where the tricolour Qadhafi banished now flies...

Munich hard sells eco-friendly bid

ARINDAM NAG

DOHA A MUNICH 2018 Winter Olympic Games Bid Committee delegation led by Chair Katarina Witt, bid CEO Bernhard Schwank and Secretary-General of the German Olympic Sports Confederation Michael Vesper are showcasing the Bavarian capital’s bid at the 9th World Conference on Sport and the Environment (WSCE) that started in Doha on Saturday.

The delegation is putting a great deal of emphasis on the environmental part of the bid, which they say is groundbreaking.

Schwank talking to journalists on the sidelines of the WSCE said, “Environment is one of the three pillars of the IOC and environmental legacy is the cornerstone of our bid.

We have come to this excellently arranged conference as we are sure that several experts in the field of sports will assemble here for the purpose.

We hope to further our cause further here by showcasing to them our environment- friendly bid.

We are here to learn and show our plans.” The conference represents an ideal opportunity for the bid committee to share its vision for staging the first ever carbon-neutral Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Katarina Witt was excited to be participating in an event so closely aligned with Munich 2018’s core priorities: “We are delighted to be attending this prestigious event.

Sustainability has been the cornerstone of our bid concept since the very earliest planning phase.

We have dedicated an enormous amount of time and resources to it and we are proud of the ecological roadmap we have created.” Vesper said another fact that makes Munich strong favourites is the fact that over 75 percent of the infrastructure is in place and the remaining 25 percent will require minimum construction.

“Our concept is based on sustainable use of existing world-class venues and infrastructure.

As much as 99 percent of the area for sports venues is already in use.

All existing venues will be renovated to make them 30 percent more energy efficient.

Just one percent of the total sports facility space will be converted into new permanent sports venues – that equates to less than the size of a football pitch.” Simone Seefried, head of bid panel’s communication department, said, “300 million euros have been spent in the last 10 years for upgradation of the existing facility and budget for the bid is 33 million euros.

The bid also enjoys strong backing of the corporate bodies.”
