Arabs´ Defining Moment
ONCE I had lunch with Samuel Huntington at the Harvard Faculty Club. I was eager to talk to him because he had used my 1991 book, La Revanche de Dieu ("The Revenge of God"), in his famous article and subsequent volume, The Clash of Civilisations. I had argued that the emergence of religious political movements from the 1970s onward had comparable roots in Islam, Judaism...

China had brought the case before the World Trade Organisation in September 2008 to challenge US duties set on steel pipes, woven sacks and some off-road tires. Last October, a WTO panel rejected almost all of China´s claims. But China asked WTO appeals judges to take another look. They did‚ and on Friday, in a big reversal, found largely in China´s favour. China´s mission to the WTO in Geneva said it welcomes a decision that "strikes at the heart of how the United States has applied countervailing duties to Chines...

BANK of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa said on Monday the central bank will provide huge amounts of liquidity to the banking system, reinforcing the bank´s determination to keep markets stable in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck northeastern Japan. The BOJ is likely to provide 2 trillion to 3 trillion yen in funds through its market operations Monday morning, two to three times the normal amount, to soothe markets and keep short-term borrowing costs from spiking. "We will monitor market conditions and plan to provide markets with a lot of liquidity first thing tomorrow morning," Shirakawa told reporters after attending a...
