India´s Marathon Trial
AS the trial of the alleged lone survivor of the terror squad behind last year´s Mumbai attacks finally began in earnest last week, lawyers were already preparing to ask for yet further delays. The proceedings have been plagued by hold-ups, but on Monday, the first witness is due to be crossexamined. He has already identified Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab as the man he saw shoot dead a policeman trying to arrest him. The shooting came at the end of a three-day rampage of co-ordinated violence.
Colombia´s Dark Secret
The toxic fallout of a grisly army scandal continues to spread in Colombia, as more soldiers are arrested over their alleged roles. In recent days another three colonels have been arrested, bringing the total number of military personnel captured to at least 22. The "false positives" scandal has revealed that the army murdered civilians, who were in turn dressed in rebel uniforms or given guns. They were then presented as guerrillas or paramilitaries killed in combat.

270 ABP students graduate
Academic Bridge Program (ABP) Director Dr Miles Lovelace handed out graduation certificates to 270 students in a glittering function held at the Jewan hall of Al Dana Club on Sunday. This was the eighth ABP graduation ceremony and the largest number of graduates so far. Speaking to Qatar Tribune, Dr Lovelace said, "It has not only been the biggest class but also the most successful one in terms of university admissions. So far 178 of the students have gained admission in various universities.
30 prison inmates undergo training
A four-day course organised by the interior ministry for the inmates of Penal and Reformatory Institutions Department (PRID) ended on Thursday at the headquarters of the PRID. Prominent expert Dr Ayyoob Khalid al Ayyoub, advisor of Al Hewar Club of Kuwait conducted the course for 30 jail inmates. The course focused on several aspects including human development, how to overcome problems in life, how to convert weak points to strong points, future planning, psychological rehabilitation.

378 civilians killed in Sri Lanka
An all-night artillery barrage in Sri Lanka’s war zone killed at least 378 civilians and forced thousands to flee to makeshift shelters along the beach, a government doctor said on Sunday. The army and Tamil Tiger rebels blamed each other for the barrage, which the doctor said left at least 1,100 people wounded.
Thousands flee Pakistan’s NW
More than 100,000 panicked people fled Pakistan’s northwest on Sunday as the government briefly relaxed a curfew to allow civilians to escape a fierce onslaught against Taliban insurgents. Pakistan’s military said that about 200 rebels had been killed in the last 24 hours in the region, where families fled to escape bombardments.
