An 88-year-old Qatari citizen with several chronic diseases succumbed to coronavirus (COVID-19) on Sunday to take the death toll to four as the total positive cases jumped by 279 to 1,604 in Qatar.
An acute bacterial infection in the blood ultimately led to the 88-year-old’s death, the Ministry of Public Health said on its website. The deceased received immediate intensive medical care upon his arrival at a hospital on March 3. Although necessary treatment and care was given, his condition deteriorated and he succumbed this morning, it added.
The Ministry of Public Health extended its condolences to the family of the deceased.
Meanwhile, 14 more individuals got cured of the virus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 123.
Some new cases discovered on Sunday were among those returned to Qatar from abroad and the contacts of these travelers, including citizens and residents. Some expatriates were also diagnosed with the infection on Sunday. All the newly-confirmed COVID-19 patients are in quarantine with proper medical care.
The Ministry of Public Health said it conducted coronavirus tests on 3,806 people on Sunday, bringing the total number of tests so far to 35,757. The recent surge in new cases is due to increase testing that became possible owing to the use of new testing techniques and rise in the number of laboratories equipped to test for COVID-19.
The ministry said work was continuing to increase the capacity of laboratories.
