More than 6,000 people have been tested for coronavirus so far in Qatar and 800 are in quarantine, said Communicable Disease Centre Head Dr Abdullatif al Khal, assuring the public that there was no need to panic over the epidemic.
The medical teams in Qatar were able to trace within a week all those who had come in contact with the first set of expatriates tested positive for the virus, he said in a press conference on Wednesday.
On March 8, the Ministry of Public Health announced for the first time that three expatriates working in the country had contracted the virus. The 12 previous cases all involved Qatari citizens and other nationals evacuated in late February from Iran.
In the subsequent days more cases were confirmed, with Wednesday seeing the biggest jump of 238, taking the total infected tally to 262.
Hamad al Rumaihi, the Director of Health Protection and Control of Communicable Diseases at the Department of Public Health said all the infected individuals were in good health and were receiving proper treatment in the hospital.
He said most of those tested positive were young workers with strong immunity. They are likely to overcome the disease fast, he added.
“We are continuing to investigate the spread of the disease and if anyone is suspected of having contracted the disease, we will isolate him or her immediately,” he said.
He called on the public not to panic and lead their lives normally but with proper precaution against the coronavirus.
