People in Qatar could be in for a treat as they might be in the path of a rare and the last solar eclipse of 2019.
On December 26, places in the Middle East and Asia will be treated to a 'ring of fire' solar eclipse. Observers should be able to see it between 5:30am and 8am on Thursday.
Qatar Centre for Space and Astronomy President Sheikh Salman bin Jabr al Thani said this rare phenomenon has not been witnessed in the region for more than a century, and it will not be repeated for another century.
Unlike a total solar eclipse, like the one in 2017, Thursday's phenomenon will leave a little ring of Sun when hitting the point of totality, a type of type of eclipse is called an annular eclipse.
An annular solar eclipse occurs when a New Moon is furthest from the Earth on its elliptical orbit. It can’t fully eclipse the Sun, and instead observers see a “ring of fire” or “ring of light” around the Moon. It is essentially a partial solar eclipse, so at all times observers must wear protective solar eclipse glasses.
