The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) completed today the implementation of a pilot cool pavement project with an asphalt-cooled substance that has adverse effects on solar radiation. The asphalt cryogenic material was piloted on parts up to 200 meters of vehicle lanes on Abdullah bin Jassim Street by Souq Waqif, and the material was also tested on 200 meters of pedestrian and bicycle paths in front of the Cultural Village “Katara”.
The study of the project will be for 18 months, and based on the outcome of the pilot, it will determine the success of the pilot and its wider applicability.
The road opened to the traffic to start testing the effectiveness of this material and to measure the success of this experiment and its possible formal application in the road network in the State of Qatar.
Special devices and sensors have been installed by road experts and contractors to measure the effectiveness of the material in reducing asphalt temperature and comparing it to conventional asphalt. This pilot project was carried out in cooperation with the Japanese Oriental Company, one of the leading companies in the implementation of this technology.

Asphalt Pavement Cooler Features:
Unlike conventional asphalt, which contributes to increased temperature by absorbing up to 80 to 95% of sunlight, cooling pavement reflects UV rays and absorbs solar radiation to a lesser extent and can have a positive effect on overall temperature reduction, if we look at the size of areas covered by the conventional asphalt layer.
A number of developed countries, the United States of America in particular, have avoided this innovation, in an effort to reduce high temperatures in the atmosphere and contribute to reducing emissions and other air pollutants, thereby conserving the environment.

Reduce vehicle tire friction and extend road life:
A protective material has been set for the ground marks to protect them from contact with vehicles and to increase their age.
Closely related to energy efficiency:
Research findings by experts in the field of environment and sustainability suggest that the use of cool pavement can reduce overall temperature and thus reduce emissions, and research also suggested that cool paving material reduces heat-related illnesses, slows smog formation, enhances pedestrian ability to use the road and promotes traffic safety, as light colored pavements reflect street lights and front car lights better, making vehicles more visually visible to their drivers.

Improving air quality:
By lowering air temperatures in residential areas, cool pavement can slow chemical reactions in the atmosphere that cause smog.
Pavement cooling specification:
Cooled paving material can be made  from traditional paving materials, such as concrete. The new coating of the concrete asphalt layer, reflecting about 50% of sunlight, consists of four layers of the primary layer, followed by three consecutive layers that reduce heat absorbed by solar radiation.
